Changing taste in music

I don't know who to blame for this, or where it comes from. There was a time in my life where the majority of my musical interests basically ranged from alt rock to hard rock. Throw in some 80's and Ice Cube and there you, go, that was what I liked.

A year ago my friend JL posted a story about his trek to Podunk, South Something, and listening to the Scissor Sisters over and over again. I picked up the album and did pretty much the same thing. (listen to it over and over again, not trek to Podunk). During that time I was also becoming more interested in the 80's-esque style of Killers, Elefant, Interpol, yadda, yadda.

Enter Gnarls Barkley, which made me go back and find more of their individual earlier work and then I get hooked on Lady Sovereign, this awesome kid from England, which then expands my collection to more Streets/Dizzee Rascal fare.

How awesome is THIS?! Lady SOV is coming back to the States to play. And when? My birthday, bitch! El Rey, NOVEMBER 15TH. Boo-YA! I'm so there.

And I expect it to be better then the Scissor Sisters show I just saw. I was SO EXCITED for that. But it was a) in the Shrine Expo, which has the shittiest accoustics next to, say, a barrell, b) Ana Matronic's mic was shit and c) it was the first show for the new album and clearly, they weren't as tight on the new stuff as the old. But it was still very entertaining, so I give it a 7 out of ten. And seriously, WHEN did audiences get so damn tall?! Same thing happened at Rob Zombie. I can't even see at floor shows anymore. WTF?!

Anyway, check out this awesome new Gnarls Barkley video. OK, the ending is kinda nasty. OK, really nasty, but it's still cool.

Oh, and Little Lost Robot posted this a few weeks ago, but it makes me so happy you gotta go check it out as well.

One last thing! What do you think of the new James Bond song? Chris Cornell did the intro this year. I think it's pretty good.

It ain't yo Mammy's Bond Song

Well, it has been for a few weeks anyway. We lucked out and only Nip/Tuck started while we were gone. After watching it, I have decided that the plotlines on that show are decided after some shrooms, a few bottles of vodka, and a spinning wheel. "No, we already did the drug/boob smuggling thing. No, we did the slasher thing. No, no, we also did the transsexual thing. A few times, actually. No, Matt's already killed people. C'mon, people, keep up! No, we already did the Hermaphrodite thing. Wait, what was that? Yes. YES!!! Flipper Baby it is! You get a raise!"

Anyway! Not the point. The point is new TV!

Sunday! Dexter. CSI by day, serial killer (criminals only) by night. SWEET show. Highly recommended.

Monday! Heroes! My fave new show of the season. A lot happens each week so even if I could guess where it's all going, they have the opportunity to take it to ever growing levels. The website has some cool comic-book side stories as well, which also will feature into later episodes. Also on Monday is Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. I really wanted this to be my favorite show of the season, but after 3 episodes, it seems to be the same thing each week and apparently the ratings on it drop by the millions every half hour it's on, so I sense impending doom.

Tuesday brings nothing new, but Veronica Mars is back and that's a good thing! She starts using the word 'FRAK'!! Tuesday also had Smith, but while very cool, it just got canceled, so I deleted them all before watching them so I wouldn't feel bad.

Wednesday! I was digging Kidnapped, but that just got canceled as well (although they have 13 episodes to wrap it up) and Jericho is pretty sweet. It does a great job with the small town vibe as they try and unite against the face of nuclear armageddon across the U.S. The cast does a great job, even though a lot of them haven't had a lot of recent successes (exception: Gerald McRainey of Deadwood). Lost premiered last week as well and it was DAMN GOOD. I might have to bring back my mAc's Lost recaps each week, because it really WAS that good. I TiVo'd The Nine, but haven't had a chance to watch it yet.

Thursday! Grey's Anatomy is back. I didn't watch this show until the 1st season came out on DVD (about a week or 2 after the bomb episode), and by the time we finished it (in 2 days) we were like junkies waiting for the next season to come out. Plowed through season 2 this summer and watched the first season again and half the 2nd season AGAIN before this season started. So while it's not new, it's the first time I'm watching it live, per se. In front of it is Ugly Betty, which is pretty damn entertaining. It's like Devil Wears Prada, but it's a remake of a Spanish show which came out before the book/movie, so it's not a ripoff. It's a pretty entertaining show. Especially Betty's 11-year old gay nephew.

Friday! Frak new shows! Galactica, baby! GALACTICA!!!!! Face-rocking glory! Behold it! Love it. Be it.

AND

DAMN! Yeah, yeah, OK, it's been SIX weeks since I last posted a damn thing, but hey, I've been busy. REALLY busy. And, um, jetlagged. Right, right, I'm jetlagged. Having a hard time sleeping and all that. Yeah. Right.

Australia was amazing on EVERY level. (Dinah's posted a full recap here) I finally got to see some of my best friends again! (i accidentally typed in 'brest' friends first, but since they are all girls, i guess that makes sense. go freud!) Anyway, it was just the best time ever. I drank VB a-go-go and stuffed many a meat pie in my face. Tons and tons. But not enough, as I just put an order in to my mom, who's driving to Seattle next week, to get me more from the Australian Meat Pie Company up there. They are as good as a street shop in Oz, so that's good.

It's amazing how you can see people after nine years have passed and nothing has changed. After some rapid-fire catching up, it's as if you saw them last week. The Mahers are as lovely as ever and doing well in Adelaide and Melbourne, Ange is thriving, running her own PR company as well as a wonderful charity in honor of her mother and sister, and meeting Clare's James was fantastic and the four of us had some ridiculous fun. Champagne! It was weeks of good times. I think the only bad thing was the thing with the wine. What do I look like, a smuggler?

Oz montage 1.jpg

Anyway! We hit the zoos (see Potter-esque photo above), I got tattoo #10 (10? or 11. no, 10. 9 was just really big) and we spent a day at the wineries in Adelaide. Which was GREAT! Until I ended up in the stocks for helping myself to a cask. Anyway, oh! the smuggling thing. We bought 22 bottles of wine and thought we could ship them home. We can't do that. Legally, anyway. So after a lot of hassles and with Sarah's help we ended up shipping them to Melbourne and carrying them home with us on the plane. (YES, on the plane. YES, I know it's liquid. They were checked. You just can't carry it into the cabin.) Anyway, customs saw us when we came in with the boxes, groaned, told us to lie and hide it or ship it home with clothes next time and sent us on our way because it would have been too much paperwork for him. So all the worrying was for nothing.

The end! Of course a lot more happened than that, but my biographer got the rest of the details.

Until next time, CHAMPAGNE!!
